4.5-magnitude earthquake jolts Dhaka, other parts of Bangladesh

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh on Thursday night. The tremor was felt around 9:40pm (Bangladesh time). Confirming the matter to The Daily Star, Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the earthquake originated near the Bangladesh-India border in Sylhet.
According to the France-based earthquake monitoring agency EMSC, the quake's epicentre was near Silchar in India's Assam state, about 92km east of Sylhet city. It occurred at a depth of 10km. EMSC said the earthquake struck at 9:10pm local time, which corresponds to 9:40pm (Bangladesh time).
Earlier, on June 8, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was felt in Bangladesh. Its epicentre was located about five kilometres from Punakha district in Bhutan.
