A furious Jeremy Clarkson has made a veiled threat to Lord's Cricket Ground after his lager was snubbed by bosses. Though meant as a joke, he referenced an infamous incident where vandals poured a gallon of oil and gouged three large holes on the pitch Jeremy had been hoping to stock his prestigious Hawkstone beer and cider at Lord's, but was ultimately denied. Instead, bosses chose to go with Italian beer company Peroni − and Jeremy was furious. Taking to his social media, he penned: "I have two words for you : George Davis." This alluded to the vandalism that left the cricket ground unfit for use in 1975.
Clarkson, 66, has been vocal about his disappointment after Peroni − owned by Japanese drinks conglomerate Asahi − landed the deal to provide lager to the venue's bars for the next three years. He opted to channel his rage with a thinly-veiled historical nod, according to the Express . Back in 1975, bank robber George Davis was wrongly found guilty of an armed heist in Ilford, Essex. His conviction triggered widespread outcry; walls and overpasses throughout Britain were daubed with the painted message, "G DAVIS IS INNOCENT." The movement reached its peak with a dramatic protest at Headingley in Leeds in August 1975.
Cricket supporters hoping to witness England wrap up victory against Australia in the concluding Test of the Ashes series were met with more painted words near the ground's entrance declaring: "Sorry, it had to be done." Inside the stadium groundskeepers were stunned to find the pitch had been dug up and drenched with oil. The fixture was abandoned and the episode dominated national news. It seems unlikely that Clarkson plans to replicate the Davis supporters' behaviour, as he framed the reference as a joke. Though, he did remark: "We might just have a message about them in tar on the pitch, not that I'm bitter or anything." Clarkson unveiled Hawkstone lager in 2021, utilising barley cultivated on his Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire.
Initially conceived as an exclusive offering for Clarkson's Farm Shop, it's now sold online and across numerous major supermarkets. He cheekily promoted the brew by establishing a choir bearing the same name, which subsequently appeared on − and won − Britain's Got Talent. Several TV commercials were reportedly produced but prohibited by the Advertising Standards Authority, due to Clarkson saying "f*** me, that's good" in at least one of them. A new ad, featuring Clarkson's beloved sidekick Kaleb Cooper, is scheduled to broadcast on June 17.
This was chosen deliberately to air in the final commercial break on ITV before England face Croatia in their opening World Cup group fixture. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters .
