Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan believes the Ghana national football team have the quality to make an impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he admits the team’s lack of experience could prove challenging. The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama for the tournament, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Gyan expressed confidence in the current squad and the emerging young talents within the national team setup. “We have the tools. We have young players coming up.
The experience is a bit dicey. As somebody who has been in the game, we will do everything, we will give our support,” he said. The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker, who now serves as Brand Ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and Colts football, stressed the importance of supporting the younger players as they prepare for football’s biggest stage.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars are currently holding a training camp in Cardiff ahead of next month’s international friendly against Wales. Players already in camp include Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Jordan Ayew, Caleb Yirenkyi, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Elisha Owusu, Gideon Mensah, Marvin Senaya, Jerome Opoku, Benjamin Asare, Joseph Anang, Solomon Agbasi, and Alidu Seidu. The team trained at Dragon Park on Monday, while the remaining invited players from the 28-man provisional squad are expected to join camp soon. Ghana will open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23.
The Black Stars will conclude their group-stage matches against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
