The death of a 17-year-old boy who was shot in south Delhi last week sparked protests and a road blockade in Chhatarpur on Tuesday as grieving family members and residents demanded swift justice. Ahead of the teenager's last rites, scores of women and residents gathered in the area and placed the victim's body on the road, blocking traffic and raising slogans against the accused. Protesters demanded strict action and speedy arrests in the case. A heavy police deployment was made to maintain law and order.
Family members, joined by residents, gathered at CDR Chowk and staged a protest, alleging inadequate action and seeking assurances of justice. The protest led to disruptions in traffic movement across the area.
According to a traffic advisory, heavy congestion was reported on SSN Marg and Chhattarpur Mandir Marg, while movement towards Maidan Garhi, Rajpur Khurd, Chandan Hola, Dera, Shani Dham and Bhati Mines was also likely to be affected. As emotions ran high, heated arguments were reported between some family members and police personnel. The teenager had suffered a gunshot wound to the head on May 26 during an incident in Amar Colony. After fighting for his life on ventilator support at the AIIMS Trauma Centre for several days, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday. “Now that he is gone, we want justice for him.
The person who took his life should face the harshest punishment under the law. We have lost everything, and nothing can bring him back. All we ask is that justice is delivered,” said the victim’s aunt. The investigation has also intensified following his death.
The case was initially registered on an attempt to murder charge, but has been converted into a murder case. The probe was transferred to the Crime Branch following the teenager succumbing to his injuries. The police said three people, including a juvenile who is suspected to be the main accused, have been apprehended. A 16-year old alleged shooter was apprehended on May 28, while another accused, identified as Jai Kumar, has been arrested.
According to investigators, a fourth suspect remains absconding. The police have recovered the weapon and used in the crime and the vehicle linked to the incident.
