The Yanks might be taking the footy, but they’ll never take our pints – according to East Ender Danny Dyer. With the World Cup kicking off in just weeks, all eyes are on North America who are hosting the beautiful game.
But one thing is for certain – it’s football, not soccer. That’s according to Dyer , who put up a fight against Hollywood’s Rob Lowe for the latest ad by Paddy Power. From American halftime shows to fighting through a pub crowd for a “pint and a slash”. From fireworks above the stadiums to sticking a flare up your bum.
The Brits are taking back their game. During the ad, Danny and Rob battled out their cultural differences, with the former getting topless. In one frustrated moment, Dyer shouted out: “It can’t go on like this, can it?” Former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy responded: “it can”. Elsewhere, Peter Crouch looks glum while being chanted around and the French threaten to take the World Cup home.
Rob Lowe might be clinging to his T-shirt cannons and cowboy hats from the sideline, but even he admits there’s no place like home. Speaking to the Daily Star, he revealed that while he loves the atmosphere in the US, “Nothing compares to a home game in the Premier League . It’s pretty hard to top that. “I’ve been to a Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge. It’s a great old stadium.
I know they’re supposedly building another one, but Stamford Bridge is pretty sick.” Rob informed us that he’d be sitting in LA on June 12 for the first match – but for him, is it football or soccer? “If I’m in America, I call it soccer, but if I’m anywhere other than America, I call it football. Football becomes American Football when I’m abroad too.” On Dyer, Lowe added: “I have to confess I had never seen him in anything! I’d heard he was a bit of a legend over here in the UK and I have to agree, he is really funny, genuine, and a very good actor. “When he walked on set, within about four minutes I'm thinking he’s got this energy and presence about him. Completely magnetic. “As an American, you think you’re prepared for big personalities, but Danny’s got this very specific British edge to him and it was great working with him. “As for Peter Crouch, our scenes were done separately, so I didn’t get to chat much about his experiences at Spurs , but as a fellow podcaster, I know he’s a giant of the game.” Hollywood film star Rob Lowe stars as the face of Paddy Power’s new World Cup ad campaign alongside UK national treasure Danny Dyer.
The ad will air from Saturday 30th May across TV and online. Have you joined Threads? Follow Daily Star to keep up to date on all things sho wbiz here . Want all the biggest Showbiz and TV news straight to your inbox?
