Dhaka’s two city corporations today launched extensive waste removal operations following the slaughter of sacrificial animals after Eid-ul-Azha prayers, as thousands of sanitation workers took to the streets to clean the capital. Waste removal activities began simultaneously in different neighbourhoods across the city soon after animal slaughter started in the morning. Visits to several areas, including Wari, Narinda, Gandaria and Sutrapur, around 2:00pm showed city corporation cleaners collecting animal waste using pickup vans and handcarts. The waste was later transferred to large dumping trucks and transported to designated Secondary Transfer Stations (STS).
Meanwhile, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam formally inaugurated the waste removal campaign by launching the transportation of waste from the Kalabagan STS to the Matuail landfill. Speaking at the inauguration, he said the DSCC had taken all-out preparations to remove sacrificial waste within the stipulated timeframe. “Within eight hours of the launch of the operation, all sacrificial waste generated on the first day of Eid will be transported to the landfill. We are hopeful that the entire DSCC area will be cleared of sacrificial waste by 9:00pm tonight,” he said. Seeking cooperation from residents, he urged citizens to perform sacrifices at DSCC-designated spots to ensure quicker waste disposal.
At Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam and DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan inaugurated waste removal operations at the Section-12 STS on Ceramics Road in Mirpur around 2:00pm. Officials from both city corporations said they were committed to ensuring 100 percent removal of sacrificial waste within the scheduled time to preserve the sanctity of Eid-ul-Azha and prevent environmental pollution. Alongside sanitation workers, senior city corporation officials supervised the operations on the ground.
Residents expressed satisfaction with the pace of the waste removal work and hoped the city would be cleaned within the announced deadline. The city authorities also urged residents to cooperate by disposing of waste at designated places and using polythene bags where necessary to help maintain cleanliness during the festival.
