The bodies of an elderly couple were found in their house in New Janta Nagar, Shimlapuri, Ludhiana. The development came to light when the couple did not answer repeated phone calls of their daughter. The latter, suspecting some foul play, asked her relative to visit the house. As the woman’s relative arrived, the person found the gate locked from inside.
When there was no response from inside, the relative informed the police. Even foul smell had also been emanating from the house. Both victims had severe head injuries, raising suspicions that they had been murdered. Their bodies were found lying separately.
The door was slightly latch-locked from inside. The deceased were identified as Kuldeep Singh (72) and his wife Harmeet Kaur (70). Neighbours said Kuldeep Singh and Harmeet Kaur were seen walking around the street two days ago. Everything seemed fine till then.
On Friday and Saturday, when neither of them left the house nor seen in the street, the people assumed they were inside. However, the matter came to light after foul smell started emanating from the house. On receiving information about the incident, senior police officials, led by ACP Anubhav Jain, and a team of forensic experts reached the scene. Babbal, a relative of the deceased, said the couple had stayed in the Shimlapuri area for 55 years.
They had a son and five daughters, two of whom stay in Canada, one in the United States and one in England. A daughter stays in Ghaziabad. Their son died in 2006. The ACP said the control room received a report that the elderly had been unresponsive for two days.
When the police entered the house, bodies were found lying at different parts of the house. The ACP said the deceased had head injuries and they might be attacked with some heavy objects. “Preliminary investigation could not establish the exact cause of the crime. Even the house was also not found ransacked, which means no burglary or loot took place. The police are exploring various angles, including a property dispute in the family.
Soon, the case will be cracked,” Jain said.
