Elderly man arrested for attempted rape of 4-yr-old in Shariatpur

Police arrested a 65-year-old man yesterday for allegedly attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in Shariatpur Sadar upazila. The incident allegedly occurred around 1:00pm yesterday when the child was playing on the bank of a pond near her house. Palong Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam confirmed the matter to The Daily Star, saying, Hasan Molla allegedly took the girl into the pond and attempted to rape her. The child’s screams alerted two nearby teenage girls, who informed the girl's mother.

Local residents then detained Hasan after the mother raised an alarm. As enraged locals tried to beat up the suspect, police intervened and rescued him before taking him into custody. The OC said initial attempts by police from the Burirhat outpost to take him into custody faced resistance from locals, prompting additional forces to rescue and arrest him. The child’s father filed a case against Hasan under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
