Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman visited the Maronite village of Karpasia at the invitation of local residents, where he met both with current members of the community and with people from the village living in the Republic of Cyprus. In a social media post, Erhürman thanked the residents for their warm welcome and emphasized the importance of maintaining contact between the island’s communities. The politician also separately addressed the upcoming elections in the TRNC.
According to him, holding local and parliamentary elections almost simultaneously could place a serious burden on the electoral system and call into question the effectiveness of election administration. Erhürman noted that a particularly heavy responsibility falls on the election authorities and the Supreme Electoral Council. He stressed the need to assess in advance the possible risks to the transparency and democratic legitimacy of the process. In another statement, the Turkish Cypriot leader focused on energy issues and regional cooperation.
According to him, topics such as natural gas, electricity interconnections, maritime zones and trade routes can either increase tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean or become the basis for peace and interdependence. Erhürman called on international organizations, including the UN and the EU, to support initiatives aimed at stability and cooperation rather than at deepening confrontation. “Political and economic rationality require choosing the path of cooperation that will benefit all the peoples of the region,” he подчеркнул.
According to Erhürman, his further efforts will be aimed at promoting dialogue, lasting peace and the search for solutions capable of strengthening stability both in Cyprus and across the entire region.
