A chilling true crime documentary has been labelled better than Netflix's The Crash, and it's available for streaming right now. Netflix viewers have been captivated by documentary film The Crash, which explores the disturbing case of Mackenzie Shirilla. The chart-dominating programme smashed records globally, securing the top position. Within a single week, between 18 May and 24 May, it accumulated an impressive 27.6 million views, rising from the previous week's figure of 11.7 million views.
Based on Netflix's Tudum, The Crash claimed the number 1 spot in Films across 27 countries, having already spent a fortnight in the Top 10. However, audiences are now seeking their next marathon viewing session, and there's one particular title that deserves everyone's attention. Posting on Reddit recently, one member requested true crime suggestions "that have the same feel as The Crash" with numerous respondents proposing the identical documentary - American Murder: The Family Next Door, reports the Mirror . American Murder: The Family Next Door documents the harrowing killing of Shanann Watts and her two young children, utilising archive material including police bodycam recordings, text exchanges and domestic footage.
A Netflix description states: "Using raw, firsthand footage, this documentary examines the disappearance of Shanann Watts and her children, and the terrible events that followed." Suggesting the true crime documentary on Reddit, alongside others, one user commented: "All three use body cam footage from the police on the scene, follow the investigation step by step, and there's nothing graphic in them. They have a similar feel as The Crash, imo." Though, one declared it surpassed The Crash, saying: "American Murder: The Family Next Door was definitely GOAT. Tops 'The Crash'. So much text message conversations and analysis of social media posts." A third responded: "I listen/watch alot of true crime but American murder almost finished me off, I am haunted by that years on from watching it." Initially released in 2020, the documentary continues to leave audiences stunned.
With an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one critic stated: "This documentary truly left me speechless. It perfectly captures how a single whim can destroy everything and how a carefully planned lie can spiral completely out of control." They continued: "Out of all the mystery and true crime documentaries I've seen - including those about serial killers - this one stands out the most. "It's shocking, unpredictable, and filled with moments that make you question how far people are willing to go to protect a secret. By the end, I was left with my mouth wide open and more questions than answers." Another remarked: "Powerful and heart wrenching story with first hand footage and a story that makes you want to go back and watch again to see the telltale signs.
Sad, but gripping." A third echoed: "A true crime documentary that, with surprising twists and an engaging story, presents a haunting and heartbreaking depiction of troubled marriages, spousal abuse, and the dangerous influence of social media." American Murder: The Family Next Door can be streamed on Netflix
