Former Grimsby Town striker Lenell John-Lewis has finally teamed up with his high street namesake. The forward, affectionately known by the Blundell Park faithful as "The Shop," has officially signed a deal with the retail giant John Lewis ahead of a massive summer of sport. John-Lewis had two memorable spells with the Mariners, including more than 90 appearances between 2013 and 2015, and he was part of the squad in the season Town returned to the Football League in 2022. The striker was famously serenaded by Town fans with the iconic chant, "his name is a shop!" Now playing his football for National League side Boston United, the 37-year-old is finally turning that terrace banter into reality.
The retail partnership is launching just in time for a busy summer of international football, with the department store utilising the striker's unique name to help the nation upgrade their home viewing experience. New research from John Lewis reveals that 58 per cent of people in the UK plan to watch the majority of the upcoming matches from the comfort of their own sofas, largely driven by late kick-off times.
While Grimsby fans will remember John-Lewis for his work on the pitch and crucial goals, his new role will see him offering expert tactical advice on home entertainment. He will be active across social media channels to help fans avoid matchday "red cards," such as blocked screens and poor audio, by advising on the best television and surround-sound setups. Reflecting on the endorsement deal, Lenell John-Lewis expressed his delight at the connection that Grimsby fans know all too well. He said: “It feels surreal to me to have heard this chant my whole career, and now to be signed by the actual John Lewis… it's mad, and I love it.
This summer is going to be packed full of amazing sporting events, and I'm buzzing that 'The Shop' and the shop are finally teaming up to help people create the perfect set up for hosting friends and family - as that's what it's all about.” The retailer is pulling out all the stops for the campaign, aiming to ensure that home viewers feel like they are sitting right in the stadium. John Lewis brand director, Rosie Hanley said: “This year, more people are choosing to watch football from home, so expectations around the viewing experience are at all time high. We're making it easier than ever to bring the football home, offering everything fans need to create the ultimate set up under one roof. With visuals sharp enough to rival a VAR check and sound so immersive you'll feel like you're right in the stadium, we want to bring fans closer to the action this summer.” Did you know you can make Grimsby Live a preferred source of news in Google, which will mean you get more of our breaking news, exclusives, and must-read stories straight away?
