Langley Community Music School (LCMS) is hosting an evening of live jazz music with the Brad Turner Trio on Friday. The performance will feature the legendary Brad Turner on trumpet joined by André Lachance on bass and Joe Poole on drums. The seasoned musicians will perform a selection of timeless jazz standards, along with original pieces composed by the artists, explained school principal Carolyn Granholm.
But what makes this evening so special is not just that Turner is a multi-Juno Award winning musician, but that he is a former LCMS student and since 2021 has served as an artist-in-residence at LCMS, where he leads teen and adult jazz ensembles and gives a number of jazz workshops and masterclasses throughout the year. She calls him one of the most respected jazz musicians in the country, known for his versatility. “Brad Turner is a celebrated trumpeter, pianist, drummer, and composer who has played alongside jazz icons including Diana Krall and Tony Bennett,” she elaborated, noting that throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Vancouver Mayor’s Art Award for music and multiple national Jazz Awards for his work as a composer and performer.
Meanwhile, Lachance is a highly sought-after bassist and guitarist who has been a staple of the Canadian jazz community for decades. He has toured the world and recorded extensively, earning a Western Canadian Music Award nomination. And Poole, a drummer, is a mainstay of the Vancouver jazz scene. He’s known for his swinging style and sensitive accompaniment at major festivals across North America and work with a long list of international jazz stars and local legends alike. “The chemistry between these three musicians is truly spectacular, and the program they have put together for this concert is going to be a real treat for our audience,” Granholm said. “Whether you’re a seasoned vet of live jazz or this will be your first experience, we invite everyone to come together for the evening and experience world-class jazz in an intimate setting.” Tickets for the Brad Turner Trio are $38 for adults, $35 for seniors, and $18 for students.
LCMS students attend free. They are available by calling the box office at 604-534-2848 or visit the school’s website at langleymusic.com. The concert will be hosted in the Rose Gellert Hall, at 4899 207 St., at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 5.
