A charity football match is being hosted for a huge Liverpool supporter who has been diagnosed with stage four cancer. Jamie Marvill found a pea-sized lump on his right testicle in 2023, which was confirmed to be cancerous after visiting the doctors. The cancer has since moved to his lungs and eventually worsened from there, and Jamie was diagnosed with mixed germ cell cancer. He had 13 tumours in his right lung and 11 in his left.
Doctors removed the tumours in his right lung, but they grew back almost instantly, and it was then that they confirmed it was stage four cancer. Jamie has had chemotherapy since but has been told that his condition is incurable, and treatment is being used to slow the cancer down. After suffering from severe migraines and seizures, the cancer had spread from his lungs to his brain, so he underwent brain surgery to remove the tumour in his brain, which was a success. The tumour, however, started to slowly grow back, and Jamie was offered radiotherapy to shrink the tumour and ease any headaches.
Jamie added that he started suffering from bad headaches again, and after a scan, it was confirmed that the cancer was back in his brain, and he is back on chemotherapy. Due to the incurable nature of his condition, he is now looking at private treatment. After suffering so much, the Liverpudlian has not let it get him down and wants to remain positive. He said: “I say to my family, I only expect bad news now, and anything else is a bonus. “I’m still hopeful and positive.
I feel healthy in myself, other than when I do have seizures and when the headaches get bad, but I can still enjoy myself. I am still positive every day.” In March, he received a message from a member of North West Community Stars (NWCS), who are a charity football club that play for causes across the region. It was suggested to Jamie that a charity match could be set up in honour of him, and help raise funds for his treatment. A match has since been confirmed and will be hosted at Fulwood Amateur AFC on 31 May at 13:00.
An XI of Jamie’s family and friends, managed by Preston North End legend and Bradford City manager Graham Alexander, will take on NWCS. In the build-up to the game, Jamie has been sent an abundance of supportive messages from far and wide, including words from ex- Liverpool players Jamie Carragher , Robbie Fowler , and NWCS striker Rickie Lambert. Jamie has been blown away by the support and has found it difficult to believe. He said: “It goes to show how many people care, and I’m taken aback by it all.
I didn’t expect to receive even half of this support People are reaching out to me who I don’t even know, it’s crazy.” Ahead of the match, supporters have been asked to bring shirts, flags and tops to help create a special day for Jamie and his family. Tickets are now available to purchase for the game and are priced at £5.
