Asian Championships silver medallist Meenakshi Goyat expressed satisfaction after defeating World Championships bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat during the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) women’s trials for the Asian Games squad. The trial for the 53 kg division, held on May 31 in Jind, Haryana, was the highlight of the day. Meenakshi won 6-4 in the semifinals against Vinesh, marking the biggest upset, though she lost narrowly to Antim Panghal 3-2 in the final.
Although Meenakshi has not secured qualification for the Asian Games scheduled from September in Japan, her victory over Vinesh is notable. Commenting on her performance, she said, “Yes, it is a great victory. I wanted to fight till the end. I did not want to look at the result, win or loss.
I just wanted to fight.” She acknowledged making some mistakes and being slightly careless during the match, but emphasised her belief in beating Vinesh: “I have to believe. I was really excited to fight her and win the match.” She dedicated the win to her family and coaches who supported her efforts. Looking ahead, Meenakshi stated her goal to become world champion at the World Championships in Kazakhstan from October 24 to November 1: “I want to focus on becoming a world champion this year.” To aspiring wrestlers, she advised, “Work hard. You will definitely succeed one day.” Meenakshi’s father, Prem, said he set a target for her to become a renowned wrestler representing India, including at the Olympics.
He shared his conversation with Meenakshi after her victory over Vinesh, where she expressed happiness and determination to perform well and aim for gold at the Olympics. He described the celebratory atmosphere in their village and home following the win, calling Vinesh “a great wrestler” and noting that beating her is “a big medal in itself.” Prem reflected on the injuries Meenakshi endured, recalling that doctors at one point doubted her ability to continue wrestling due to her condition. He attributed her recovery and progress to her hard work. Regarding future ambitions, Prem expressed his hope that Meenakshi will win gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
