Speaking to the Morning Show from the Dominican Sisters’ mother house in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sister Miriam said many people were surprised to discover nuns live lives that are far more relatable than stereotypes suggest. “I think people are just surprised to see sisters doing normal things and day-to-day things and that we’re joyful,” she said. “They see the sisters interacting with one another and it’s uplifting. They see our peace and our joy.” The podcast explores a wide range of topics, from faith and vocation to popular culture, with guests discussing everything from zombie movies to what they are giving up for Lent - with one joking she was giving up speeding. Sister Miriam said the project fits naturally within the Dominican tradition of teaching and sharing the faith. “The podcast is just another form of teaching. The TikToks are a form of teaching.
We’ve been doing this for centuries,” she said. The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist community was founded in 1997 and has embraced modern media as a way of reaching new audiences.
Despite her growing online profile, Sister Miriam said she remains largely disconnected from social media and does not even own a phone. “Our life is very balanced. We have a prayer life. We have our time together with the sisters,” she said. “This isn’t just my project. It’s our sisters together.” Dominican Sisters Open Mic is available on the Open Light Media YouTube channel and podcast platforms, with new episodes released every Wednesday.
