Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin today said a group is trying to create social instability through misleading campaigns, improper behaviour and indecent activities involving the prime minister, the home minister and other important state figures. He said such activities are harmful to the country’s democratic environment and state discipline. “We have already seen that by taking advantage of this unprecedented freedom, a group is deliberately trying to create disorder and is involved in different kinds of false campaigns,” Mahdi said at a press conference held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), marking 100 days of the BNP government. Mahdi, also PMO spokesperson, said the government is sincerely working to establish human rights, freedom of speech and the rule of law. He said this had been reflected repeatedly in the new standard of openness and tolerance shown in the last 100 days. “On the other hand, the politics of false campaigns, hatred, or abusive speech in the name of freedom of speech has become a bad tactic of one group.
This practice goes against the hopes of the mass uprising,” he added. Mahdi said during the “fascist rule”, people’s freedom of speech was taken away and the media was kept under control by force. “In contrast, every BNP government – led by President Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia – ensured freedom of expression and the free growth of the media in the country. In that continuation, the current government is also working to ensure the highest freedom for the media and journalists,” he added. The press conference also discussed the implementation of different election pledges after the formation of the BNP government.
