Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he is looking forward to obtaining and reading My Life of Duty and Allegiance, the recently unveiled memoir of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, describing it as a significant addition to Nigeria’s historical documentation. Obasanjo made the remarks while speaking with journalists during a visit to his residence, when asked whether he had read the book, which was publicly presented in Abuja on May 19, 2026. “I am anxious to get a copy,” the former President said. He noted that Gowon played a central role during some of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s post-independence history. “General Gowon has spanned the most turbulent and eventful part of Nigerian history since independence. Giving us his account of events is very important, and he must be appreciated for the courage to do that,” Obasanjo stated.
The former President also addressed his absence from the book launch, despite his longstanding relationship with Gowon. “I wrote a heartfelt letter of apologies to General Gowon, my Oga, for my inability to attend,” he said. In the apology letter dated May 4, 2026, Obasanjo explained that he was unable to attend because of an international engagement. “I will be unable to attend. As the Co-chair of the InterAction Council, I have a longstanding obligation to attend a scheduled meeting of the Council in Hong Kong, which coincides with the date, May 19, 2026, of your book presentation,” he wrote. “As a fellow patriot, you will understand that this commitment is one I cannot easily defer,” he added. The memoir, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, recounts Gowon’s life, military service, leadership journey and reflections on pivotal events that shaped Nigeria’s history.
Obasanjo’s comments highlight the importance attached to the publication by leading statesmen and the continued interest in firsthand accounts of Nigeria’s post-independence experience. Opinion Nigeria News
