Obsession OTT Release Date: Why Will Horror Blockbuster Stream Within A Month Of Theatrical Debut

Mounted on a budget of USD 1 million, Curry Barker’s psychological horror Obsession has earned over USD 75 million globally within weeks. According to reports, the film is said to stream on digital video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, including an unrated version, on June 2, 2026. An official confirmation from the makers is due on this. Reportedly, it will stream on Peacock for subscribers later this summer.

Obsession released internationally on May 14, whereas its India release is on May 29. Amid its success at the box office, many are wondering whether the film will continue its theatrical run. Obsession to make digital debut soon? Jason Blum of Obsession distributor Blumhouse hinted in an interview with Variety that the success of the film may extend its theatrical run.

He said he is a ‘big believer in a long, consistent theatrical window’. Blum further shared that it is great to know the audience is cheering for the film to stay longer in theatres rather than rooting for its early digital debut. “People cherish the theatrical experience, and they’re willing to give up the convenience of seeing something at home to keep their local theatre alive,” he added. Why is Obsession reportedly arriving early? As per Blumhouse’s policy, films that earn less than USD 50 million get a short 17-day window.

If it earns anything above that, the window is extended to 31 days minimum. The standard window in the industry is 45 days. In case Blumhouse’s rule is applied for Obsession, the film should ideally release on June 15.

According to Forbes’ report, Universal Pictures has a deal with Blumhouse, and due to this, the film will most likely stream on Peacock and then Netflix for a few months. All streaming deals are highly dependent on Obsession’s theatrical performance. Since Peacock is majorly for the international audience, Indian viewers will have to wait longer. The film’s official synopsis reads, “After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.” Obsession had its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Following this, the film continued its festival run at events like Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest (SXSW).
