Organized by the Athletic Association of Guyana in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the event brought together some of the country’s top athletes, clubs, and emerging talents in a showcase of speed, endurance, teamwork, and strategy. The relay, which started and concluded in front of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on Main Street, challenged competitors with a demanding route through the heart of Georgetown. Athletes navigated several of the city’s major thoroughfares, including Church Street, High Street, Young Street, Camp Street, New Garden Street, Regent Street, and Avenue of the Republic, before making a final push back to the finish line on Main Street. Teams were required to field six athletes, comprising four males and two females, adding a tactical dimension to the competition as clubs battled for Diamond Jubilee glory.
In the Under-16 Mixed Distance Medley Road Relay, Running Brave Athletics Club emerged victorious in a time of 37:51.00, finishing ahead of Team Nice Athletics (38:51.20) and Buxton Youth Developers (39:12.30). Police Progressive Youth Club placed fourth in 42:25.50, while Lawn Tennis Federation completed the top five in 45:32.42. The 16-and-Over Mixed Distance Medley Road Relay produced another impressive display, with Guyana Defence Force Track Club storming to victory in 30:51.80.
Police Progressive Youth Club secured second place in 31:09.10, while Running Brave Athletics Club claimed third in 35:15.90. Team Nice Athletics finished fourth in 37:33.10, Thunderbolt Track Club placed fifth in 38:22.11, and Lawn Tennis Federation rounded out the field in 45:25.76. Adding to the atmosphere was the presence of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, and Vice President of the Guyana Olympic Association Cristy Campbell, who joined spectators in cheering on the athletes throughout the event.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ramson highlighted the significance of celebrating Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee through sport, emphasising the values of unity, excellence, and national pride that have defined the nation’s journey over the past six decades. At the conclusion of the competition, Minister Ramson, Director Ninvalle, and Campbell presented prizes to the top-performing teams, recognizing their outstanding efforts and contributions to a memorable day of competition. As Guyana continues its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Road Relay stood as a powerful reminder of the country’s sporting talent, community spirit, and enduring commitment to excellence.
