BOURNE — The Millionaires proved their undefeated record was likely worthy of a better seed in the state tournament on Tuesday, shrugging off a long trip to Cape Cod to beat Bourne 4-1 in the MIAA D-V Round of 16. The Lenox girls were seeded 10th and had to drive to the coast to play No. 7 Bourne, but rode a singles sweep to improve their record to 18-0. The 4-1 win was tidy on paper, but three matches went three sets, two of which were wins at first and second singles by Katie Shove and Julia Zanin. Both had to fight back after losing their opening sets, and Zanin escaped with a 6-4 win in her third, while Shove won the third 6-2.
Caity Giardina swept a tough third singles match 7-5, 6-4. Lauren Romano and Brooklyn Butler won second doubles. Singles — 1. Shove (LX) def.
Russell 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 ; 2. Zanin (LX) def. Hopwood 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; 3. C.
Giardina (LX) def. Noonan 7-5, 6-4. Doubles — 1. Halunen/Swierkowski (B) def.

Fairhaven 1, Taconic 0 ACUSHNET — A first-inning error came back to bite the Thunder in the toughest of ways on Tuesday. No. 6 Fairhaven scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error. Starting pitcher Evan Roccabruna got the next two batters out, but the runner scored on a two-out single. From there, Roccabruna was stellar.
He threw 75 pitches through six innings, scattering four hit and not allowing an earned run. He struck out four and walked one. The offense couldn't pick him up, though. No. 27 Taconic mustered four hits off Fairhaven's Ryan Pires, but struck out 13 times and walked once.
After a leadoff walk to Quentin Christopher, he retired 10 straight before Gavin O'Donnell singled in the fourth and moved to third on an error. He was ultimately doubled up on third trying to score on a fly out after an appear. Gavin Maffuccio led off the fifth with a single and got to third as well, but was stranded. In the seventh, Roccabruna hit a lead-off single, but couldn't get beyond first base.
Taconic 000 000 0 — 0 4 2 Fairhaven 100 000 x — 1 4 2 Maynard 11, McCann Tech 1 MAYNARD — The Hornets were locked in a battle with No. 4 Maynard on Tuesday in the MIAA D-V Round of 16, but couldn't quite keep it buttoned up for seven innings. No. 13 McCann allowed five unearned runs on five errors, falling behind late and watching the Tigers pull away. The game was locked down and scoreless through three full with Emma LeMire matching her counterpart Maddy Karlon. The hosts scored three runs on two hits and an error in the fourth to go in front, and while the Hornets answered with a run in the fifth, the Tigers were hungry for more.
Maggie Wohrle reached to start the fifth, moving around on a LeMire single and scoring on a two-out RBI drive by Gabby Driscoll to make it 3-1. But Maynard scored six in the home half. LeMire struck out four over four innings, before Avery Lane finished with one earned run over two innings. Karlon struck out 12 in seven innings.
