The Houston Texans have a very promising young core of stars on both sides of the ball that give their fans hope for a potential Super Bowl run in the future. Despite some disappointing playoff losses, the Texans seem primed to be a contender in the AFC for years to come. Now, the main focus for the Texans over the last few offseasons has been making sure that their stars are happy and will be around for the long haul. On Tuesday, they took a big step towards that when they agreed to a contract restructure with star wide receiver Nico Collins that guarantees more money and gives him a raise over the next two seasons, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Pro-Bowl WR Nico Collins and the Texans reached agreement today on an adjusted contract that guarantees his salary the next two seasons, and also includes a $9 million cash increase this year and an $8 million cash increase next year, per his agents Drew and Jason Rosenhaus,” Schefter reported on X, formerly Twitter.
While the Texans’ pass-catching group around Collins had fluctuated plenty over the last few seasons, the former Michigan standout has been a constant security blanket for CJ Stroud. In 15 games last season, he caught 71 balls for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns. He has reached the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons and seems to only be getting better with experience. As a whole, the Texans have had some struggles on offense over the last few seasons, but most of that has come down to deficiencies on the offensive line and in the running game.
Houston has taken a lot of strides to improve in that department, but Stroud and the passing game will still be relied on heavily for production on offense. That will leave a heavy workload on Collins, which he has earned by becoming one of the top wide receivers in all of football. Now, he will be paid like one too.
