The End of Oak Street, to be released in Australian cinemas on August 14, stars Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathway as parents living on a quiet suburban street in the 1980s which is suddenly transported to a new, and very dangerous, place. An earlier teaser trailer for the film didn’t give much away, but this new full-length trailer, released overnight, appears to reveal that the titular Oak Street has somehow been transported 65 million years into the past, with ferocious dinosaurs terrorising the neighbourhood every time residents set foot outside: Early reaction to the dino-reveal seems positive, with many commenters on YouTube saying they’re excited to finally see a dinosaur movie that’s not a part of the Jurassic Park franchise. “Appears more impressive than the most recent Jurassic World films we have seen,” wrote one viewer. Another agreed that it “looks better than any of the last few Jurassic World movies we got.” “Regardless how this movie turns out, it’s still nice to see other Dinosaur projects outside the Jurassic franchise,” reads another top comment. It is perhaps surprising, given the huge success of the Jurassic Park franchise since the first film was released in 1993, that dinosaurs have appeared in films so infrequently outside of the franchise itself, which has now birthed seven films.
The End of Oak Street, produced by J.J. Abrams, marks the fourth feature film for writer-director David Robert Mitchell and his first since the 2018 black comedy Under the Silver Lake. Mitchell’s mainstream breakthrough came with the 2014 horror flick It Follows, with a sequel to that film set to be released after The End of Oak Street. The film is part of an incredibly busy year for lead actress Hathaway, who has no less than five films being released in 2026: She’s already appeared in the smash sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the psychological drama Mother Mary, and will next month be seen in Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey before Oak Street’s release in August and finally, the release of “psychological erotic thriller” Verity in October.
