Today (June 4), Netflix has dropped a powerful documentary titled The Murder of Rachel Nickell, exploring the brutal crime and the following investigation. A synopsis reads: "In 1992, a young mother is killed in broad daylight on London's Wimbledon Common, leaving her two-year-old toddler as the sole witness. "Exploring the shocking real events behind the drama series The Witness, this gripping documentary from BAFTA-nominated director Lucy Bowden examines the notorious, years-long police investigation that followed. "Featuring exclusive archive footage, first-hand accounts from family members, and insights from leading forensic experts, the film unpacks how a flawed, highly-publicised inquiry led to the wrong man's prosecution, before a stunning breakthrough reignited a family's fight for justice over a decade later." The Murder of Rachel Nickell hears from Alex himself, as well as showing heartbreaking archive footage from experts trying to extract vital information.
But who is Alex Hanscombe and where is he now? Here's all you need to know. Who is Alex Hanscombe and where is he now? Alex Hanscombe is the son of Rachel Nickell, who was killed at the age of 23 while out walking her dog.
At the time, he was aged just two and had been with his mum when she was attacked and stabbed 49 times. Alex had been thrown to the ground during the attack, but was later found clutching his mother's body. Now aged 36, the documentary shows harrowing archived footage of when experts tried to get Alex to relive that day and trying to gain evidence for an investigation breakthrough. In daily sessions that went on for weeks, a child psychologist and Alex's dad Andre, gently tried to coax information out of him, but the pressure appeared to be too much on the toddler.
After their visit to the site of the attack, Alex was bombarded with questions before chilling footage showed the toddler in distress before dad Andre fled to the car, putting an end to the trauma. The two eventually moved abroad for a fresh start as Andre said in the documentary: "It felt like we had left a great deal of evil behind us." However, Alex continued to have nightmares and they rarely spoke about the incident until one day, Alex opened up about the "bad man" that killed his mum. The documentary hears from Alex himself as he says: "My father sacrificed everything for me. I am forever indebted to him for that." There have been multiple documentaries on the case that shocked Britain, and the world, with Alex rarely opening up about the horrifying ordeal.
Since his experience he has been working with Netflix on the production of the true crime documentary as well as the crime drama series based on the story, The Witness. He moved to Barcelona, and went on to study hypnotherapy as well as graphology which is the analysis of handwriting, as well as travelling. He has also written his own book about his ordeal, titled 'Letting Go: A true story of murder, loss and survival’. The Murder of Rachel Nickell can be streamed on Netflix now
