Authorities have identified Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine, as the suspect in a string of shootings that left seven people dead across Muscatine, Iowa, on Monday, June 1, 2026. According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers were first dispatched at approximately 12:12 PM to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 200 block of Park Avenue. When police and emergency responders arrived, they found four people inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified McFarland as the suspected gunman and determined that he had left the residence before officers arrived. Police later located McFarland on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge.
Authorities said he was suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers and emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures, but McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene. As the investigation continued, officers uncovered additional crime scenes connected to the case.
Police found an adult male dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a residence on Mill Street. Investigators then responded to a business on Grandview Avenue, where another adult male was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound. In total, seven people died, including McFarland.
According to police, preliminary findings indicate the shootings were the result of a domestic dispute. Investigators believe all of the victims were family members of McFarland. The names of the victims have not yet been released as authorities continue notifying family members.
In a statement, the Muscatine Police Department said detectives are still processing the crime scenes and interviewing witnesses. "The investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives continue to process the crime scenes and conduct witness interviews," police said. The investigation is being led by the Muscatine Police Department with assistance from the Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
