Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died at the age of 52 in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Now, according to the latest development, a fast-track court in Guwahati framed charges against seven people, which included four for murder. Some months back, foul play in Zubeen’s death was ruled out, confirming that it was accidental drowning. In the latest development reported by a news portal, the court of district and sessions judge Sharmila Bhuyan levelled charges under 10 sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita post-hearing arguments from both sides.
The charge sheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by Assam CID was also examined. Zubeen’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, the manager of the event in Singapore, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a longtime bandmate of the singer and Amrit Prava Mahanta, a renowned Assamese singer, are facing serious charges under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to murder. Other provisions, such as alleged acts committed jointly by multiple individuals, cheating, extortion, concealment of evidence and criminal breach of trust are mentioned in the case. As per the report, Siddhartha, Shyamkanu, Shekhar and Amrit Prava are charged for criminal acts committed jointly by multiple persons, criminal conspiracy and murder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Reportedly, the court document mentioned Shyamkanu faces charges under Sections 308(2) (extortion), 318(4) (cheating and dishonest inducement) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence), while Siddhartha and Shekhar were additionally charged under Section 316(5) (criminal breach of trust).
Section 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) has been levelled against Amrit. In addition, Zubeen’s cousin and former Assam police officer Sandipon Garg has been charged under Section 105. The other names are Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Borah. They have been charged under Sections 61(2) and 316(5) along with the singer’s two security guards.
